The history of Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) can be traced back to 3 July 1852, when the School of Decorative Arts was located in Limerick’s Creamey Street. The college reopened in Cecil Street in 1855, under the patronage of Lynjoit by the Athenaeum of Limerick, founded by William. The Limerick Athenaeum was part of an international movement to promote learning in the arts and sciences started by John Wilson Croker at the Athenaeum Club in London in 1823.

For most of the school’s history, it was founded in 1910 as the Municipal Technical College (locally known as the Red Technical College). By the 1970s it had grown to the point that a new campus would be acquired at Moylish for technical education, and arts education continued in many parts of the city center.
