Print Hochschule Furtwangen University Urkunde 2026. Nestled in the heart of the renowned Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in southwestern Germany lies a historic yet vibrant institution of higher learning—Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU). This public university, with its legendary history spanning three centuries, its nature-oriented campus, and its close ties with industry, shines as a jewel among German universities of applied sciences.
From Clock Gears to Technological Pulse: A 175-Year Success Story The birth of Furtwangen University stems from a legend of precision and time. In 1850, engineer Robert Gerwig established Germany’s first national horological school deep within the Black Forest, aiming to train professionals for the then-world-leading watchmaking industry. This school laid the foundation for the Black Forest’s status as a global center for precision mechanics and watchmaking. To this day, the Deutsches Uhrenmuseum, established in 1852, remains an integral part of the university, witnessing the evolution from mechanical gears to digital codes. After World War II, the university underwent several transformations, evolving from an engineering college into the Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences, officially named in 1971. Today, it is a modern university with approximately 4,300 students, dedicated to cutting-edge technology and applied research. As its motto, “We stand for the best of times,” states, HFU has successfully transformed its 175-year heritage of craftsmanship into a future-oriented driving force for innovation. Three Campuses: A “Black Forest University” Integrated into Nature
Furtwangen University boasts a unique geographical location. It lacks traditional walls, naturally blending its campus into the beautiful scenery of the Black Forest. The university is primarily located on three campuses:
Furtwangen Main Campus: As the birthplace of the university, this campus is home to programs in computer science, media, and life sciences. Surrounded by forests and lakes, it provides students with a tranquil and conducive learning environment.
Füllingen-Schwenningen Campus: Located on the former site of the Kinzel watch factory, opened in 1988, focusing on international business, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.
Tutlingen Campus: Established in 2009, located in the heart of a globally renowned medical technology industry cluster. With the motto “Powered by Industry,” this campus collaborates deeply with over 100 medical technology companies, focusing on medical engineering and materials science.
Discipline Highlights: Cutting-Edge Exploration in Four Major Fields
Following departmental restructuring, HFU’s teaching and research are primarily concentrated in four schools:
School of Computer Science and Applications
School of Engineering and Technology
School of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences
School of Business, Design, and Media
This setup enables interdisciplinary studies. The university offers a wide range of distinctive programs, from artificial intelligence and robotics, cybersecurity, digital games and immersive media, to international business management, engineering psychology, midwifery, and physician assistant. As one of Germany’s top universities of applied sciences, HFU enjoys a prestigious reputation throughout Germany for its programs in economics and management, computer science, mechanical engineering, and media studies. Its business school is ranked among the top seven business schools in Germany.
The university places great emphasis on the internationalization and practicality of its curriculum, offering several undergraduate and master’s programs taught entirely in English, such as International Business Management and International Engineering. According to data from the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), 65.5% of the students at HFU are in engineering sciences (including computer science), highlighting its strong position in STEM fields.
Industry-University Collaboration and Internationalization: Seamless Integration of Theory and Practice
“Practice-oriented” is HFU’s most distinctive feature. Benefiting from its location in Baden-Württemberg, a strong economic region in Europe, the university maintains close partnerships with globally renowned companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, and SAP, as well as numerous hidden champions in various industries. This collaboration extends beyond joint laboratory construction and research, permeating daily teaching. For example, at the Tuttlingen campus, businesses not only provide millions of euros in funding annually but also directly participate in curriculum design and delivery.
HFU also excels in its global perspective. It has established partnerships with 165 universities worldwide and ranked first in the 2012 German Higher Education International Cooperation Ranking. The vibrant international cultural exchange atmosphere on campus allows students to accumulate valuable cross-cultural experiences during their studies.
A Small but Excellent Campus Life
Despite its leading position in many academic fields, HFU maintains a welcoming and accessible atmosphere. The student-faculty relationship is close-knit, and the campus environment is friendly. Located in the heart of the Black Forest, the cost of living is relatively affordable compared to larger cities, while the natural environment offers abundant outdoor sports opportunities, such as skiing and cross-country skiing. Although the university does not have its own sports center, it provides students with a wide range of recreational sports activities through partnerships with local organizations and offers flexible learning support programs for competitive athletes.
