Salisbury University’s predecessor was the Maryland State Normal School, which officially opened on September 7, 1925. Initially, it was an institution offering only a two-year program to train elementary school teachers. When the first class of 105 students enrolled, Maryland was facing a teacher shortage. During the Great Depression, Maryland extended the teacher training program from two to three years, and then to four years in 1934, laying the foundation for the school’s upgrade to a comprehensive university.
